Pakistan cricket embraces disgrace, again!

OPINION - 30th August 2010
By Ammar Faheem

For everybody back home and for cricket lovers around the globe, this has been one heck of a day full of shame and humiliation. As the country battles the worst flooding and population displacement in its history, Pakistani cricketers are found involved in alleged ‘Spot-Fixing’ and the evidence is all too damning to ignore it as mere speculation just as yet.

It all began in a shady manner when Salman Butt chose to field first after winning the toss – without even examining the pitch as opposed to Andrew Strauss, the English captain who took his time to look at how the pitch was like. Amir rocked like a star, a star that he has always been, tightening the noose on England and reducing them to seven wickets down on a score as little as 102.

From here on, the ‘spot-fixing’ saga unfolds as England went on to make a world record eighth wicket partnership taking their overall total to 446 – a score Pakistan hasn’t even been close to throughout this summer.

A tabloid newspaper, News of the World, put forth shocking evidence about spot-fixing, giving away precise information on when the eighteen year old star Muhammad Amir and the experienced Muhammad Asif would be delivering no-balls. The information came true. In total disregard of the position his country had given him, Muhammad Amir over-stepped twice, over two-feet outside the popping crease each time. Muhammad Asif’s no-ball though was only marginally over the line.

The arrested crook, Mazher Majeed, also disclosed that the players were conspiring to lose the first two ODI’s to make sure Afridi was removed from captaincy and Salman Butt was installed in his place as captain in all formats of the game.

Having watched the evidence video myself, I am utterly disgusted and ashamed at the confidence the culprit has shown – claiming to have managed over ten players of the Pakistan team and that he could bring about the desired ‘spot’ and ‘match’ fixing results given the right amount of money.

International cricket is already banned in Pakistan citing security concerns. The players should have felt some sort of responsibility playing on foreign soil. This is the final insult they could thrash out to the Pakistan nation after losing the 4th test miserably to England allowing them to win the series 3-1.

With the ODI’s and T20 matches just around the corner, it is high time the PCB swung into action and took concrete action against one and all involved. Player, Manager, whoever! The Pakistani nation would like justice to be dispensed quickly on this one. If the fail to take action, I call upon the Honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan to take Suo Moto action on this situation and have Salman Butt, the Akmal brothers, Asif and Amir removed from the squad before the upcoming matches.

Nothing is more important to us than our pride, our self-respect. We cannot allow crooks like them to ruin our image the world over in a situation where we are at war against terror, floods and infiltrating secret agencies from all over the world.

Action must be taken this time. We have waited long enough; we have seen one blunder too far this time by the PCB under the inept leadership of, in Malcom Speed’s words, a Bufoon. He must stand up and prove his worth as an able administrator or go home. The time has come to act before the ICC slaps any more bans on our cricket loving nation.

I was in Lords and I was so ashamed of their act. Why do these people let us down?

Very well written article. There is nothing left and Chief Justice must take action against them. You guys can’t imagine how much humiliation we have to face here in UK by their actions. For a second if we consider them allegations, the players can’t give hundred percent after all this, therefore PCB should call them back and send reserve players instead. This action will portray positive picture of PCB at-least.

This is very embarrassing situation for a cricketer. Match fixing news is devastating on the country level.

I completely agree with him. ICC should put life ban on Muhammad Asif, Kamran Akmal and Salman Butt. But, we should as ICC to give a chance to Muhammad Amir because its his first mistake and he is still immature. He should learn from his mistakes.

Well said … we should also not forget that these cricket players are just the tip of the iceberg. We need to catch the big fishes too! However, I think we should spare Supreme Court of Pakistan for this one. Too much for them is not good either.

Aussie cricketers confirm Indian bookies involvement, wide conspiracy against Pakistan
SYDNEY – Australian cricketer Shane Watson says he and fellow test player Brad Haddin were approached by an illegal Indian bookmaker on last year’s Ashes tour of England.Watson on Tuesday said both players immediately reported their separate meetings to team management because the approaches were “more intense” than those from most ordinary fans. The bookmaker met Watson while the Australian team was staying at an exclusive hotel in London and praised the 29-year-old allrounder before inviting him out for drinks and “a bit of fun.” “I didn’t think too much more of it until I found out a bit more information and that he was actually one of the illegal bookmakers,” Watson said of the meeting in England. “It was just a little bit different to what normal fans are.” Regarding Amir, Watson said “I probably feel for him more than anyone because he’s only a young, naive and innocent young guy,” Watson said.”I found him to be a brilliant competitor on the field. He always gave everything he got every single time that I competed against him and I found him to be an extremely skillful bowler for a 19-year-old.” Haddin said he was approached separately, with an Indian man coming to the wicketkeeper’s hotel room while he was talking to his wife on the telephone.”I got a knock on my door from someone asking if I wanted to come across to their room to have a drink, which I thought was a bit odd,” Haddin explained. The unusual encounter raised Haddin’s suspicions and he alerted team manager Steve Bernard and the ICC’s security manager John Rhodes.Amid the latest claims of match-fixing, Pakistan’s surprising loss from a commanding position in a test against Australia earlier this year has been called into question by some critics. Pakistan lost the three-match series 3-0.

Dear All Pakistanis Brothers,

i am residing in Dubai and working with different nationalities its very hard to me to digest all the news on media since i am lover of cricket, and we often use to chat on cricket with over Indians friends,
Particularly if u see on Indian news channels the are hyping this issue like anything,
then i remind them for Azher ud din and Ajay Jadaja they have life time ban due to match fixing but they made Azher ud din to MP (Member of parliament)
i think we should not be stand with others
we need to show patience InshAllah we will come out from this issue gracefully by the grace of GOD.
its just an report with poor evidence it’s just set stage drama to discourage us since we are the weaker link in Asia.

This is a clear case of entrapment and by no other then a smut tabloid. If this had happened in the USA the court would have thrown out this case in a second, because in the US entrapment is illegal. We as Pakistanis should learn to respect our players on the international front like any other country would do. There should be an investigation and the offenders should be punished, but we should not advertise this incident through out the world.

Yes, Ammar Faheem of course it is very disturbing to hear new scandals against Pakistan cricket team. I will just say few words: “As the big cricket mafia is in charge of the ICC you can except everything from them”. They are bend to give bad name to our team especially in England, because the Cricket Mafia of ICC has their backing with help of our most cunning partners of the ICC. Anyhow, it is very easy to pin point the players who have nothing to do with it, its the bookies.

ICC should check them first and hold the players responsible, and whether they have played any part or not.
The truth will come out. Good luck to Pakistani team and players.

Well, in my opinion if any player is found indulge in some sort of match fixing or any other illegal activities, he must be brought into justice. I suggest ICC that that they should collect the data of all the property that a player has, and I think this is the only way to stop the illegal activities in Cricket….

These players have no shame.
They should be banned for life and given custodial sentences.
We as Pakistanis living abroad have to face all this disgust.
Politicians were enough, now the players have brought disgrace to their country.
They are supposed to be the role models for our youngsters. We have already corrupted our society and now its cricket on top of that.
May Allah get rid of these evil people and make our lovely Pakistan pak of these people.
