Cost effective food and agricultural biotechnology was the most urgent need of the time. This was stated by the Director of International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhry.
Delivering a lecture at the ICCBS on Wednesday he said that people in developing countries including in Pakistan have been affected by the high price of food and are spending more than half of their income on food.
Dr Iqbal, who is also a Director Pakistan Biotechnology Information Center, said that the cost effective food was the most urgent need of the time and that the agricultural biotechnology was a best solution which can increase the productivity and yields of the domestic crops and as a result the sufficient quantity will make food affordable.
He further stated that a large number of people of developing countries are surviving with the daily income of $ 1.4 a day.
The population increase will unfortunately accompany with more than 50 percent reduction of the natural resources, he said and added that therefore there was an urgent need to increase food production, and biotechnology is a best solution to achieve it.
Dr. Iqbal was of the view that in Pakistan there is still a lack of adaptation of modern agriculture practices including biotechnology tools.
Although many of Pakistani research institutions are now working for the search of different biotechnology crops for the best agriculture production, however due to the lack of proper procedure for the testing and approval, our people are not benefitted from the outcomes of the new biotechnology agriculture innovations.
