Managing Director of Pakistan International Air Lines Corporation (PIAC) Muhammad Aijaz Haroon on Monday told the Public Account Committee that PIA is suffering accumulative losses of Rs 144 billion and it needs immediate bail out package.
The meeting of the Public Account Committee (PAC), chaired by Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan met at Parliament House which reviewed the audit objections on the monetary matters of the Ministry of Defence and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) for the year of 2007-08 and 2009.
Aijaz Haroon said that due to the fuel prices hike, PIA suffered a loss of Rs 39 billion. He said that they were making good future business plan to control the expenditures and to boost the PIA.
The Chairman PAC directed the MD PIA to brief the committee about the future Business plan of and said that we have to establish our every department and have to convert the losses into profit.
About the Audit objections in purchasing of Aircraft Spare parts, PAC formed a committee under the Supervision of Additional Secretary Defence and DG Audit to check the procurement, maintenance and proposal of Air crafts parts and directed to submit report within one month.
Regarding the irregular appointments over and above approved strength in PIA, the PAC directed Secretary Defence Syed Athar and MD PIA to provide details of the appointee’s names and domicile and also provide advertisement of the said posts in newspapers.
Ch Nisar said that Political favorite’s trend must be end in PIA and every body must be treated as a normal passenger, rather he is politician or government employee.
During the meeting DG Audit told the PAC that, there are hurdles in the Audit of PIA because, PIA officials are not cooperating with the audit team properly.
Ch Nisar, Chairman PAC said that, we would never bear these types of things again and every department and official is accountable to PAC.
The PAC also reviewed the audit objections of Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA) for the year of 2007-08 and directed Additional Chief Secretary to settle the audit paras within one month.
The PAC also reviewed the report of hiring review committee and asked the Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Hamid Saeed Kazmi to inform the committee about the irregularities in the hiring of buildings for pilgrims.
The Minister told the committee that a five-member parliamentary committee in its report held dismissed DG Rao Shakeel responsible for acquiring residential buildings in sheer violation of the given guidelines.
The Review Committee had compiled the report on accommodation facilities to be provided to Pakistani pilgrims in Madina and Makkah after visiting the holy places and inspecting the hired residential buildings.Ch Nisar issued directions to the dismissed DG Haj Makkah Rao Shakeel to come in PAC and give his point of view regarding the allegations.
The committee members including Yasmeen Rehman, Riaz Fatyana, Riaz Peerzada, Khawja Asif, Sardar Ayyaz Sadiq, Hamid Yar Hirraj, Secretary Defence, Secretary Religious Affairs, Additional Chief Secretary FATA, MD PIA, Auditor General of Pakistan, senior officials of the ministry and FATA attended the meeting.
