The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Asma Jahangir said on Friday the Commission on missing persons became inactive adding that number of missing persons continued to grow.

In a statement released on the occasion of Universal Human Rights Day, Asma said there were 81,000 prisoners in Pakistani jails out of which only 24,000 were sentenced.

As many as 2800 people, the statistics said, remained under illegal custody in Swat and they were not presented before the court to date, she added.

She said the government had not delivered on its promise of bringing about constitutional reforms in the country.

The statement further said there would no progress in democratic process until the citizens’ lives and rights were protected.

The SCBA president was of the view that extending the tenure of Adhoc judges would affect the independent judiciary.
