A senior judge of the Supreme Court Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan will take over the charge of acting Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan from March 24.

According to a press release issued, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has nominated Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan as Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) as the term of incumbent CEC former Justice Hamid Ali Mirza is going to retire on March 23.

The Election Commission of Pakistan also notified the nomination whereas the oath of office will be administered to Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan by the Chief Justice of Pakistan on March 24.

While nominating Justice Shakirullah Jan as Acting Chief Election Commissioner, the Chief Justice observed in his order that if CEC is appointed as per the arrangements under the Constitution – the nomination of the senior judge of the apex court shall be deemed to have been withdrawn without any consequences
