Kashmir rebel attack wounds seven Indian soldiers

By: Fawad Khan, Uploaded: 30th May 2012

An officer in Indian-controlled Kashmir says suspected rebels fighting against Indian rule fired on paramilitary soldiers in the disputed region’s main city, wounding at least seven soldiers.

A spokesman for the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force, Sudhir Kumar, says two militants on a motorcycle fired at a truck that was dropping soldiers for patrol duty Wednesday morning in Srinagar.

Kumar says the area has been cordoned off and troops are searching for the attackers.

Indian forces have largely suppressed an insurgency that erupted in 1989 seeking independence for the region or its unification with Pakistan. Both countries claim Kashmir as its own.

About 68,000 people were killed in the uprising and subsequent crackdowns. ABC
