LHC orders Young Doctors to call off strike

By: Zuhaeb Nazir, Uploaded: 7th July 2012

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered Young Doctors to call off their strike, further ordering them to commence their out-door and in-door duties. The LHC also added that all the proceedings against the Young Doctors would be halted. The order was made on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Young Doctors stated that they would make their decision (with respect to the strike) within the General Council meeting after receiving the written order of the LHC.

Justice Aijaz-ul-Hasan of the LHC heard the case against the strike of the Young Doctors on Saturday. The counsel of the Young Doctors added that they were being removed even though the Health Secretary had assured them that no action would be taken against them; hence they demanded contempt of court proceedings against the Health Secretary. Responding to this, Justice Aijaz-ul-Hasan stated that firm evidence would be required to initiate the proceedings.

Public Prosecutor took the stance that the doctors were issued a show cause notice and later removed under the PEEDA act. LHC answered to this by stating that Doctors respect and dignity was superior and the Court would ensure that it is maintained. The Court granted appropriate time to both government and the doctors to display goodwill and added that the doctors should also have a proper service structure similar to that of Army and the Police.

Eventually, the Court ordered the doctors to resume their in-door and out-door duties. The case has been adjourned for 2 weeks.
