Merkel and Monti pledge to do everything to protect euro zone

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti agreed they would do everything to protect the euro zone and swiftly implement measures agreed by European leaders in June, the German government said in a statement on Sunday.
It added Monti had accepted an invitation by Merkel to visit Berlin in the second half of August.
