A local Pakistani TV channel decided not to air a special Ramadan show featuring the highly controversial actor/model Veena Malik due to a large public objection.
The promo of the show, which showed Veena adorned in a ‘decent’ attire and with a look of redemption on her face, had gone viral on the internet. The trailer had successfully lit up a fire across the country.
The show as to be aired on a local channel, however it was dropped after facing such raging criticism from the general populace.
A member of the production team stated, “TV is for the awaam. If the awaam does not want to see Veena Malik on this Ramadan show, then we will cancel it, we respect the wishes of the populace.”
The people expressed their dismay and exasperation over blogs, news reports and social networking websites. They said that given the actor’s course of actions, she was absolutely not a preferable fit for such a religious venture.
A PEMRA (Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority) official said, “The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has received Internet petitions calling for the show to be cancelled.”
