US Navy shoots Indian fisherman dead; condolences expressed

US envoy to India, Nancy Powell called up Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai, on Tuesday to express “regret” for the death of an Indian Fisherman and injury to four others when a US naval Vessel shot at them in the Persian Gulf. She promised that the US will conduct a full scale investigation.
Syed Akbaruddin, official spokesperson, ministry of external affairs expressed his condolences to the fishermen’s families. He said that the Government was in touch with the US and UAE authoroties to ascertain full facts and to take appropriate measures accordingly.
The Pentagon, claimed that the fishermen were forewarned many times but they kept moving towards the ship.
In a statement, the US embassy expressed “condolences” and claimed that the matter was “under investigation”.
External affairs minister SM Krishna said, “The UAE government has filed a case. They are proceeding according to their laws.”
Akbaruddin added that the Indian Embassy in Abu Dabi is working with the local authorities to carry out “full investigation” as to what caused the “tragic incident”.
He said that their embassy in Washington has been in touch with the US government and their acting counsel General is in Jebel Ali to provide all necessary assistance.
