SHIKARPUR: For the first time in one hundred years, the District Shikarpur has been worst hit by heavy rains of 350 mm last week paralysing life and causing miseries to the people.
The city returned to life after the rain water accumulated on the main circular road and other city streets was drained out thanks to a week long efforts made by the District Administration.
However, the other muhallas, and public places including Khanchandabad,New Shikarpur, Allahabad Colony, C &S Degree College, Shah Latif University Campus, Shikarpur Women Hospital, Judges Colony, District Judicial Complex, Doctors Colony still remained marooned by rain water.
Besides many of the villages and their link roads belonging to 42 union councils in taluka Shikarpur, Lakhi Ghulam Shah, Khanpur and Garhiyasin are also inundated by rain water and virtually cut off from the main city and towns.
Thousands of rain affected people in rural areas are still waiting on the embankments of the cannals and dry road sides under open sky, looking for help from Government and NGOs to provide them food and tents for shelter.
The Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Quaim Ali Shah had announced rupees 5 million to meet the rescue and relief requirements for the district which amount is awaited.
Deputy Commissioner Shikarpur Dr. Azhar Hussain Shah informed the media men at his office on Sunday evening that according to his first survey report upto 15th September, 22 persons had died and 239 persons been injured in the incidents of some 16104 houses collapse in different rural and urban due to heavy rainfall.
He also informed that eight relief camps have been established in four talukas Shikarpur, Garhiyasin, Khanpur and Lakhi Ghulam Shah where 21632 rain affectees are being given cooked food twide a day and 1750 tents were supplied to the rain victims stranded in different areas.
However, a large number of rain affected people in rural areas particularly in Begoo Brohi, Qazi Patti, Budho Buriro, Pahloo Jaffery, Baran Brohi villages in taluka Khanpur, Muhammad Usman Odho, Gulsher Marfani, Dakhan Town, Madeji, Araeen, Darro, Mirzapur, Goth Khuda Bux, Bambhihar, Nabi Shah Wagan, Chutti Drib, Samandar Khan Gopang, Sher Khan Khakhrani villages in taluka Garhiyasin, Soomar Goth, Chak, Mehmoodabagh, Aandal Mahar, Hothi, Abdoo, Suleman Shaikh villages in taluka Lakhi Ghulam Shah and some city mohallas including Khanchandabad Colony, Allahabad Colony, New Shikarpur and other muhallas are still in troubles and need immediate help for their relief and rehabilitation.
