Forced Conversion: Ripka Masih presented in court under pressure; mute to Judge’s queries

By: Zuhaeb Nazir, Uploaded: 24th October 2012

SUKKUR: Ripka Masih, another victim of forced conversion, was presented within a local Court along with her husband Manzar Dahar in Sukkur. A local Sindhi newspaper reported that Ripka Masih was presented within the Court whereby she stood mute to the Judge’s questions and was seen biting her lips in anxiety. The case was heard by Justice Naimatullah Phulpotto of the SIndh High Court Sukkur Bench on Tuesday.

The request of Ripka’s lawyer was turned down by the Judge whereby he stated that the girl was under duress and should be handed over to the “Dar-ul-Aman”. Constant inquires by the Judge asking Ripka (named Kulsoom Dahar after conversion) to put forward her position went unanswered as Ripka was seen silent during the entire hearing. The Judge later handed over Ripka’s custody to her husband Manzar Dahar and adjourned the hearing of the case till November 2.

According to the local Sindhi newspaper, Nurse Ripka Masih was forcibly converted to Islam and was made to marry Ghotki’s Manzar Dahar. Following the forced conversion, Ripka and her father Younus Masih filed two separate petitions within the Sindh High Court Sukkur Bench, seeking justice from the Court. Within the petition, Younus Masih has held that his daughter has been forcibly converted to Islam and that Barchoondi’s Pir Mian Aslam was main perpetrator.

It is also worth mentioning that Pirs of Barchoondi Mian Aslam have earlier been blamed of pressurizing and forcibly converting Rinkle Kumari.
