ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court on Friday concluded the Reko Diq case hearing with the verdict to be announced on January 7, 2013.
The case was heard by a three member bench of the SC presided over by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. The SC’s three member bench had been hearing with respect to the Reko Diq case since long. The major issue that had been highlighted within the petition, which was filed against the federal government, was that the state had leased over the gold and copper mines in Reko Diq (Balochistan) over to to the Tethyan Copper Company (Canadian and Chilean consortium of Barrick Gold and Antofagasta Minerals).
Reko Diq is renowned for its large reserve of gold and copper and is considered to have the fifth largest deposits of gold and copper in the world.
During the hearing, CJ was blunt to state that the ruling would be unbiased and that it would in accordance with the law and the constitution.
Following the completion of the arguments, The CJ thanked all the lawyers for their participation in the lengthy hearing of the case and further instructed the counsel for Tethyan Copper Company, Khalid Anwar, to submit detailed evidence with respect to the case within the upcoming 4 days.
