The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has sought a list of utility bill defaulters from various government departments for scrutiny of candidates’ nomination papers.
Additional Secretary ECP Afzal Khan said the EC has taken serious notice of weapons display and aerial firing by the supporters of contesting candidates and warns that this could result in disqualification of the candidate proved guilty.
He said the ECP has directed the returning officers to take strict action against the candidates whose supporters resort to aerial firing or display of weapons at the time of filing of nomination papers.
The Additional Secretary ECP said the Commission has so far received 3,126 nomination papers from across the country. He said as many as 1,050 nomination papers have been returned to the returning officers after scrutiny.
About utility bill defaulters, ECP has issued notifications to Water & Power Development Authority (Wapda), Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), National Telecommu-nication Corporation (NTC), Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, Sui Southern Gas Company Limited and Ministry of Housing & Works.
The ECP in its written directives sent to all these authorities stressed that they should meet the deadline, so that candidates’ scrutiny could be completed in time.
The administrations of Punjab House, KPK House, Sindh House and Balochistan House have also been directed to provide details of the outstanding dues of the defaulter candidates, which they owe to different utilities.
Moreover, the private utility organisations have also been asked to provide lists of defaulters taking part in polls.
The Chairman Wapda under the direction of the ECP has cancelled holidays of Saturday and Sunday. The offices would remain open, so that the candidates could submit their dues.
