ISLAMABAD: The Vice-Chancellor, Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has paid rich tributes to the personnel of armed-forces, especially those engaged in combating the terrorism and extremism.
Paying rich tributes to the personnel of armed-forces, the AIOU’s Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nazir Ahmed Sangi while addressing the Defence-Day function held here at the University’s main campus said that AIOU’s door would always be opened for the family of their national heroes.
On the occasion, Dr. Sangi announced that AIOU will provide special fee concession to the family members of the anti-terrorism war victims, in order to recognize the heroic sacrifices of those who lay down their lives in the defense of the country. Necessary fund has also been allocated to compensate such affected people, he added.
While paying rich tributes to the personnel of armed forces, especially those are engaged in combating the terrorism and extremism. Financial support will also be provided to those families who suffered in natural disasters and other fatal incidents. A scheme -students’ support fund- to this effect has also already been launched.
The function was also addressed by the University’s Deans and Heads of different departments. They said the education plays major role in building the nation and getting rid of various socio-economic problems. The country was facing a major threat of ‘extremism mind-set’ that created hurdles in the national progress. This mind-set, they emphasized need to be thwarted through meaningful and quality education.
The speakers further said that illiteracy, ignorance and a sense deprivation have been the main cause of lawlessness in the society. Lack of proper knowledge and education had led to many misconception and misunderstanding of the basic human values and teachings of Islam, de-tracking the nation from the road of progress. The educationist and intelligentsia need to fulfill their national duty to educate the nation through all possible means for addressing the root-cause of terrorism.
They further said that the AIOU will be playing its leading role in spreading quality education in every nook and corner of the country. They appreciated the vision and the personal efforts of the Vice chancellor Dr. Sangi for laying special focus on expanding the university’s infrastructure and opening its campus even in the country’s most remote regions, like skardu, Chitral, Lorali and Umarkot in Sindh.
They said the AIOU has already taken the responsibility of providing school-level education to one million dropped-out male and female students. The AIOU’s contribution in fighting out illiteracy and promoting quality has been recognized at the highest level, they added.
Those who addressed the function including Prof. Dr. Rashid A. Naeem, Prof. Dr. Nowshad Khan, Prof. Dr. Ali Asghar Chishti, Prof. Dr. Tanwir-uz-Zaman and registrar of the Unversity Muhammad Bashir Chaudhry. At the end of the function, the participants offered fateha for the ‘shuda’ of 1965 war.
