KARACHI: Expressing his full determination to regain Karachi’s status of a ‘city of lights’, Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Tuesday said all political parties were unanimous on the view for taking some action to restore peace in the port city, which also served as country’s main commercial hub.
“In today’s meeting, there was consensus among all political parties for taking some action, which restores peace in Karachi”, the Prime Minister, who was on a two-day visit to Karachi, said while addressing a gathering of businessmen here.
Referring to the situation in Karachi, the Prime Minister said, such situations in any countries required extraordinary steps, adding, he was not hesitant to take any action.
He recalled that the PML-N had even lost their provincial government in Sindh during his previous rule for peace and he was committed this time again to take steps to ensure law and order and peace in Karachi.
The Prime Minister, however, added it would have to be ensured that the action was aimed at eliminating the criminal elements without any discrimination or political influence.
He further said that any action or operation to restore peace in Karachi also required some necessary amendments in the concerned laws, which were being studied, to ensure effective coordination between the rangers and police.
The Prime Minister said there was also a big complaint about the flaws in investigation and prosecution systems, due to which the criminals often get bails or are set free by the courts, and the police then again had to follow such elements.
He said Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah had also assured that the provincial government was ready to give the required powers to the Rangers, while Governor Dr. Ishratul Ibad was also on board.
The Prime Minister said, there would be some more meetings on Wednesday to finalize the plan, adding, the concerned laws would have to be amended to remove the impediments, as it would not be a one-time action, rather, it would be a concerted effort.
“The day will soon come, when Karachi will again become the city of lights”, he remarked.
