ISLAMABAD: The dilapidated condition of playgrounds and swings in the FDE’ run educational institutions are posing serious threat to the safety of the children, causing injuries to them.
Majority of the institutes working under Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) are lacking the basic facilities of clean drinking water, canteens with hygienic food, quality transport system as well as proper playgrounds for the children where they can enjoy their free time.
A number of incidents have been reported during the last few years in which children fell down from the swings especially slides in the playgrounds which have no grassy area and received serious injuries.
Fahad Shah, a parent, said that his daughter fell down from a slide due to it’s dilapidated condition in one of the model institutes and there was no first aid or any medication facility in the institute.
“My daughter received injury on head due to the improper playground surface with no grass. I fear the injury could have been severe and impact her mental health, if she was not taken to the nearest hospital urgently”, he said.
Tahir, a lecturer at a local college said sports activities have greater importance in the education and these colleges have no proper playgrounds to involve the students in healthy physical activities.
And where the playgrounds exists are not well-maintained, posing risk to the safety of the students especially of junior classes.
A senior official of the FDE said that the directorate has been facing many problems and minor bills for purchasing furniture and other things were pending since years.
The official added that the FDE gets a separate allocation of funds for repair and maintenance of these institutes but there were problems in the utilisation of these resources.
