LAHORE: Additional Director Extended Programme for Immunisation (EPI) of Health Department, Dr Nazir Hussain, said pneumonia claims over 40,000 lives of children every year in the country.
Talking to APP in connection with World Pneumonia Day on Tuesday, he said that November 12 was observed as World Pneumonia Day to create awareness of the fatality of the disease.
He said pneumonia was a curable disease and parents should be aware of its preventive measures.
To a question, he said that poverty, unbalanced diet, cold and unawareness about preventive measures were reasons of the spread of pneumonia.
He said that Global Alliance for Vaccination and Immunization (GAVI) was the main provider of free pneumonia vaccine while the Punjab government provided infrastructure.
He said the vaccine was available at DHQs and other public sector hospitals throughout the year and parents should contact a nearby government hospital in case of symptoms of pneumonia.
He advised people, especially children and elderly people, to cover themselves properly by using warm clothes to protect themselves from the cold wave.
