ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan Thursday informed the Senate that around 9,000 criminals had been arrested so far in ongoing targeted operation in Karachi.
Replying to a question during Question Hour, the Minister assured the House that sole objective of the operation was to restore peace in Karachi and would not be used as a tool against any political party or group.
He said the the operation was launched after evolving consensus of all political parties.
He said law enforcement agencies were vigorously chasing those criminal element who had fled to other parts of the country and abroad.
Some such absconders were arrested from Murree, Lahore and Interior Sindh and other parts of the country, he added.
The Minister said that some of the arrested criminals had shown their affiliation with political parties, however, none of the political party contacted the authorities.
He appreciated support of all political parties for the operation, specially Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) adding some genuine complaints of MQM would be addressed in a meeting between the government and MQM delegation in few days.
Replying to a question of Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, the Minister said that recent surge in the target killing was aimed at starting sectarian violence in Karachi, ahead of holy month of Muharrmul Haram.
He said writ of the government had already been restored in entire city and added plan had already been prepared to eliminate any existing no-go-areas in this port city.
