ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Railways is planning to construct flats for employees on the ten kanal big bungalows presently in use of its officers.
Condition of residential colonies of Railways, which were in a mess, would be improved on priority, an official source told APP here on Monday.
In this regard, the department has started working to give final touches to this plan.
Strict action was also being taken against the land mafia which was occupying thousands of acres of agricultural land and residential colonies of the department.
Pakistan Railway has retrieved 2,757 acres of its land from unauthorized occupants under a special campaign launched to remove encroachments last year.
The comprehensive campaign was launched in February 2012 for removal of encroachments and to retrieve railway land measuring 5,663 acres.
In the first phase, railway land measuring 2,537 acres has been retrieved from unauthorized occupants during 2012-13 while in the second phase 220 acres land has been retrieved during last four months (June 2013-September 2013).
The Department said efforts are also underway to retrieve the remaining encroached land.
Currently, 2,906 acres of land is under illegal occupation over entire railway network and division wise break-up shows that in Peshawar 285.81 cares of land is under illegal occupation, in Rawalpindi 97.715 acres, in Lahore 870.712 acres, in Moghalpura 42.325 acres, in Multan 124.754 acres, in Sukkur 657.114 acres, in Karachi 209.663 acres and in Quetta 617.827 acres.
