LAHORE: National Assembly Standing Committee on Water and Power held its meeting under the chairmanship of MNA Muhammad Arshad Khan Leghari at WAPDA House here Tuesday.
The Chief Executive Officers of LESCO, FESCO and GEPCO briefed the meeting about working of their respective distribution companies (DISCOs).
In response to NA committee members’ queries, the Minister of State for Water and Power, Abid Sher Ali hoped that due to present government’s efforts, the duration of load-shedding in the upcoming summer would remarkably be reduced as compared to previous year.
He said the process of privatizing the distribution companies had not started yet, however, it would be done transparently and on merit-based, adding that it was government’s resolve to sell out all sick units running in loss and causing damage to the country’s economy.
He said, there was a ban on the recruitment but request had been made to the Prime Minister to lift the ban so that recruitment could be done on merit on very essential and key posts.
Abid Sher Ali said that a subsidy of Rs 30 billion was being given to the agricultural sector throughout Pakistan irrespective of any discrimination so that all farmers and people related to the agricultural sector could benefit from the subsidy.
The issue of defective transformers was also raised by the members. They were of the view that workshops run by the private sector were not up to the mark, suggesting that the transformers should be got repaired in the government-owned workshops.
Responding to this suggestion, the Minister of State vowed the government-run workshops would soon be operational and even the project of mobile workshops was in the pipeline.
The Minister also directed the CEOs of DISCOs to resolve the issue of excessive billing and officials responsible for any kind of negligence must be taken to task.
He also resolved to overcome the line losses with the help of parliamentarians in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, further saying that smart meters would uniformly be introduced throughout the country. The committee recommended that all pending schemes be completed with immediate effect without any further loss of time.

(R) Ghulam Rasool Sahi, Sardar Mansab Ali Dogar, Rana Afzaal Hussain, Rana Muhammad Ishaq Khan, Pir Muhammad Aslam Bodla, Rao Muhammad Ajmal Khan, Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, Nawab Muhammad Yousaf Talpur, Dr Mehreen Razaque Bhutto, Junaid Akbar, Rai Hassan Nawaz Khan, Maulana Muhammad Gohar Shah, Syed Kazim Ali Shah, Sahibzada Muhammad Yaqub, Chairman WAPDA and other senior officers of the Ministry and its attached departments.
