Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has approved the establishment of a rapid response force at federal and provincial levels, here on Tuesday. The Prime Minister chaired a meeting on National Internal Security attended by all Chief Ministers, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, DG (ISI) Lieutenant General Zahirul Islam, Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Ashfaq Ahmad Nadeem and DG (MO) Major-General Amir Riaz.
All Chief Secretaries and Inspectors General of the Provinces and other government officials also attended the meeting. The DG Military Operations, the Deputy Director General (ISI) and the Interior Minister briefed the meeting on different aspects of internal security. While addressing the participants, the Prime Minister said all the provincial governments and Institutions have to work hard to contribute towards establishing security and eliminating terrorism. Economic prosperity is linked with security and peace in Pakistan, the PM insisted.
A newly-legislated legal framework that deals with counter- terrorism measures was reviewed. Prime Minister directed to immediately establish National Intelligence Directorate under NACTA to pool National and Provincial intelligence resources. He also approved establishment of rapid response force at federal and provincial levels with quality and trained manpower. The capacity of federal and provincial law enforcement agencies was also reviewed at length in the meeting.
The prime minister desired that provinces should work more to ensure admissible evidence and efficient prosecution in heinous offences within the given time limits. The prime minister directed a fast track establishment of high security prisons in all provinces. He directed that the provinces should utilise the options available in existing Protection of Pakistan Ordinance, as this law has made electronic evidence admissible, allowed for a video-link trial with provision for transfer of trials/prisoners to other provinces and preventive detention of enemy/aliens. Later, the prime minister handed over bomb disposal response vehicles (BDRV) to the provinces. The vehicles were received by the respective provincial chief ministers. The vehicles are equipped with latest technology to defuse bombs and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
