HYDERABAD: Minister of State for Water and Power Chaudry Abid Sher Ali has said that after making the power distribution companies in order, a massive operation clean up would be launched against power theft and recovery of outstanding dues from the defaulters all over the country.
Across the board action is being carried out against power theft and defaulters without any discrimination, he maintained while addressing the news conference here at HESCO Secretariat on Wednesday.
The minister informed that he was personally monitoring the action against power theft and removal of ‘Kunda’ connections first from Peshawar and Sukkur, action in the region of Hyderabad Electric Supply Company has been initiated.
He said that HESCO officials have been directed to remove all Kunda connections within a month and later launch operation for recovery of outstanding dues.
Officially, the state minister informed that six to eight hours load shedding is being carried out all over the country, however, its duration is above from the scheduled hours in the areas where line losses are high.
One hour load shedding in high line losses areas is saving around rupees one million daily of national exchequer, he said and added that billions of rupees are going waste as a result of line losses.
In Sindh, he said that action against power theft is being carried out without any discrimination and it is the responsibility of the elected representatives to extend their cooperation so that the problem could be rooted out.
The campaign against power theft is in the interest of the countrymen as it badly affecting the interests of the consumers, he added.
The minister on the occasion provided details about the sub-divisions of HESCO with higher line losses which included Qazi Ahmed, Nooriabad, Mirwah Gorchani, Tando Allahyar-I, Tando Allahyar-II, Samaro, Hirabad Mirpurkhas, Nooriabad Rural, Sehwan, Citizen Colony and Allam Iqbal Sub-Divisions. Around 80 to 95 percent line losses are reported from these sub-divisions, he informed.
After finding poor performance, negligence, corruption and cooperation with power thieves, the state minister informed that the Executive Engineer Mirpurkhas Operation Division and Sub-Divisional Officers Tando Allahyar-I, Tando Allahyar-II and Nooriabad have been placed under suspension with immediate effect while action is also being initiated against others.
The Sindh government departments are the defaulters of Rs 25 to Rs 26 billions, the state minister informed and added that the provincial government owned ten thousand units of its departments and disowned the the remaining.
The Chief Executive Officer HESCO has been directed to take action against those units of the provincial government which are disowned by Sindh government, he said and added that directives have also been issued to recover the outstanding dues from owned units.
The government had signed MoUs with China worth 30 billion dollar of which 80 percent chunk will be utilized for power projects, he said.
The establishing of Guddo Power Project within nine months is a great achievement as the project’s completion time was 2 years. Another 800 MW electricity will be produced on rehabilitation of Guddu Power plant.
He said that completion of power projects of Nandipu, Tarbela Extension-IV, two coal based power projects in Jamshoro and other hydro electrical plants will provide relief to the people soon. Around 1500 megawatts to 2000 megawatts electricity will be included in the system by the end of the current year, he said.
Besides Thar Coal Power Projects with assistance of China, the government is also establishing 128 megawatts power project with the assistance of European Union, he added.
Responding to a question about the privatization, the state minister said that only those units will be privatized which are in loss.
About Thar drought, the state minister expressed his grief and termed it a tragedy and informed that he has issued directive to Chief Executive Officer HESCO to lift load shedding in Tharparkar with immediate effect.
Later, Chaoudhry Abid Sher Ali along with Chief Executive Officer HESCO and others paid surprise visit to Citizen Colony where he personally monitored removal of kunda connections.
