NATAL, Brazil–Uruguay star Luis Suarez faces a ban from the World Cup for biting an Italian player, Georgio Chiellini on Tuesday, June 24, during Uruguay’s 1-0 win over Italy.
Suarez, who plays in the English Premier League for Liverpool, is one of the world’s biggest stars but has a history of long bans for inappropriate acts at the playfield. The incident is evidenced by a television footage that was captured clearly so the ban cannot be avoided. FIFA has confirmed that the disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the player.
Suarez and the Uruguayan Football Association can submit evidence to investigators until 5:00pm (2100 GMT) on Thursday, FIFA added.
Chiellini angrily remonstrated and showed the red bite marks on his neck. He told Italian television: “He bit me, it’s clear, I still have the mark.”
Suarez tried to play down the incident in an interview with Uruguayan Television.
“There are things that happen on the pitch and you should not make such a big deal out of them,” Suarez said.
