Someone rightly said that the hands that give the most are the hands that receive the most. Among all the acts of kindness, I believe the least promoted is giving charity or alms to the poor and the needy. The significance of charity is being reminded to you as we have now entered in the most blessed month of the Islamic calendar and like every good deed the rewards for generosity are also multiplied in this month of blessings and rehmah. The Prophet (saws) said,
“The best charity is that given in Ramadan.” [At-Tirmithi].
Moreover, during fasting when a man abandons food and drink for the whole day and then when he gives charity to the ones inferior to him, it generates in him a sense of sacrifice, empathy and brotherhood. Ramadan is a month of giving and Allah provides forgiveness free of cost in this month so we avail the chances of forgiveness by making as much charity as we can. The Prophet (PBUH) also said
“Charity extinguishes the sin just as water extinguishes the fire.”
Remember no one is asking you to give lakhs and crores of rupees in charity. You may give whatever your pocket permits you as the smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention. And believe me you will feel an eternal sense of happiness and contentment by making charity. Aaidh Ibn Abdullah al Qarhi says:
“The first person who benefits from an act of charity is the benefactor himself”
Certainly, your charity will benefit the poor and will increase your wealth manifolds. Not forgetting every charitable act is a stepping stone towards heaven. So sit back and give it a thought!!
