KARACHI: Ground breaking ceremony of a much warranted Disaster Risk Management Centre was performed at Gadap Town area here on Thursday against a cost of Rs 60 million to help people exposed to man made as well as natural disasters.
The facility being constructed by Health and Nutrition Development (HANDS), an NGO comprising Sindh based doctors and medical specialists, will be equipped with all relevant facilities, said known pediatrician, Dr Abdul Ghaffar Billo.
Prof Billo, also the Chairman of HANDS on the occasion thanked local philanthropists as well as Medico International of Germany for their support for the facility.
He said the main beneficiary would be underprivileged people who would be provided with needed assistance on most urgent basis and in the best possible manner.
Dr Billo said that HANDS and its workers were also catering to the disaster affected people through provision for health, education and employment opportunities.
“We have also been extensively involved in repairing and also construction of homes for the disaster victims,” he said.
On this occasion, he also highlighted the importance of independence and prayed for unity among the nation.
Chief Executive of HANDS, Dr Tanveer Ahmed Shaikh referred to HANDS mission aimed at creation of a healthy and educated society.
He mentioned that the NGO has rehabilitated 85,790 families through provision of one room houses in 20 different districts of the country.
