ISLAMABAD: High-energy laser ultra-short pulse amplifier system is a national project of Iran to develop laser accelerators.
Laser accelerators have extensive applications in medicine especially in cancer treatment. With smaller size and lower costs, they could be a powerful rival for imported foreign-made facilities, Mehr News Agency reported.
Reza Masoudi, the director of the High-Energy Laser Ultra-short Pulse Amplifier System National Project told that the system was among the most sophisticated and advanced laser systems in the world with wide applications in developed countries.
“The national project is carried out with an approach focused on adopting the technology as a domestic technology. The project also would serve a reference standard laboratory inside the country,” he added.
Masoudi, who is Research Deputy for Shahid Beheshti University, said that currently, large body of research especially in industrial countries address the development and manufacture of accelerators.
“In Iran, these accelerators could find applications in cancer treatment. The current proton and ionic accelerators are effective in cancer treatment, but the limited number, high costs of upkeep and maintenance along with a complex technology limit their use inside, and we launched the project to develop low- cost laser accelerators to avoid such limitations,” Masoudi added.
