ISLAMABAD: Legendary Batsman Javed Miandad on Tuesday while terming the appointment of Shahid Afridi as the next Twenty20 skipper, a wise decision said now the all-rounder needs to work harder on his form and prove he was the right man for the right job.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday announced Afridi as the T20 captain till the next 2016 T20 World Cup while also retained Misbah-ul-Haq as the captain of Test and ODI squads till 2015 World Cup.
Talking to APP, Miandad said a captain’s form is very important for his team and Afridi should now play sensibly.
“He should focus especially on his batting and improve it,” the 124-Test veteran said.
Miandad advised PCB of not try just to fill in the blanks while announcing squads and captains.
“If a slot is empty and appointment has to be made than the player who is in focus for the spot should be called interviewed on his IQ and how can he make the team better and then be kept,” he said.
Miandad said this can prove the best way in improving the selection process.
“Appointments should be made on merit and performance based,” he said adding if a player doesn’t perform he shouldn’t be given a chance.
Speaking about to retain Misbah as captain till 2015 World Cup, Miandad said Misbah should aim in winning the series against Australia as it won’t be just a piece of cake.
“Don’t repeat the mistakes that were done in Sri Lanka series,” he said adding Saeed Ajmal’s absence would be widely felt in the series.
Miandad said without Ajmal he doesn’t see Pakistan leading a good bowling attack in the series against Aussies.
“Our batsmen need to stick to the crease and at least score 50’s,” he said adding the team’s performance relies on the individual performance of the players and each player should play for their country.
Miandad said he had provided the plan to the PCB on how to improve cricket.
“It is the PCB’s job on how to make the game better and they should start it from the domestic games,” he said.
