ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid on Monday said that it is people’s right to watch the channel of their own choice and not that of the cable operators.
The government believes in freedom of expression which is a pre condition for any democratic society, the minister expressed these views on a callon by a delegation of Cable Operators Association of Pakistan (CAP).
The CAP delegation was headed by President Malik Furqan Ghayas and Acting Chairman PEMRA, Pervaiz Rathore was also present in the meeting.
The minister asked the cable operators to improve their delivery mechanism so that the people could watch uninterrupted transmission of various channels.
“The Cable Operators should convert their operating system from analogue to digitalization by the December 2015,” the minister added.
Pervaiz Rashid also directed PEMRA to verify the claims of cable operators regarding compliance of digitalization of their systems.
The minister asked the acting Chairman PEMRA to give priority to the areas where cable service is not available or its penetration is at the lower side.
He further emphasized the need to create an atmosphere of healthy competition among operators so that the viewers could enjoy better quality of service.
The cable operators discussed various problems being confronted by them and the Minister directed the concerned to address their issues at earliest.
The cable operators assured the minister that they would follow PEMRA laws in letter and spirit and play a positive role in facilitating the smooth and even running of all TV channels.
