HALIFAX: Colombia’s Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah defeated Canada’s Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (9/7), 6-4 on Saturday in a Davis Cup World Group playoff tie.
The victory pulled the South Americans within 2-1 of host Canada in the best-of-five matchup to decide which nation will play in the World Group next year and which will be relegated for 2015.
Singles victories by Pospisil and Milos Raonic on Friday left Canada needing only one more match triumph to advance.
Pospisil opened with a 6-3, 7-6 (7/2), 6-3 triumph over Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo and Raonic won 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 over Alejandro Gonzalez.
The reverse singles are set for Sunday with Raonic opening against Giraldo and Pospisil set to face Gonzalez.
Canada seeks a fourth year in a row in the World Group, a level the Colombians have never attained.
