QUETTA: Four health workers including three women were shot killed and three others injured in armed attack on their minivan in Eastern Bypass area when they were on way to administer anti-polio drops to children here on Wednesday morning.
Home Secretary, Capt (retd) Akbar Hussain Durrani said that seven health workers leaving their home in Mengalabad area on Eastern Bypass boarded a minivan and when the vehicle reached on Sariab Link road, unknown armed men riding bike sprayed volley of bullet on the vehicle, leaving four dead and three others injured. “It was fourth and final day of the anti-polio campaign in Balochistan when seven-member polio workers team came under armed attack in Quetta Wednesday, resulting in loss of lives of the volunteers,” he said.
One of the injured polio worker who identified herself as Rubi told media persons at hospital that the gunmen first came in front of the minivan and opened indiscriminate fire, in which she received bullet wounds and fell down and then they came to back side of the vehicle and also opened fire at other polio workers, in which four died and two were injured. “Two lady health workers who were real sisters died on the spot and two others including a lady health worker, a male health worker succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital,” she said.
She further stated that the injured polio workers were screaming for help but no one including police or local came to rescue them. “Later, the rescue teams reached the site who shifted us to hospital,” she said.
The police said that the dead were identified as Ijaz, Hamida, Sania and the injured were recognized as Salma Ijaz, Farida Bibi and Rubi Bibi.
According to doctors at Civil hospital Quetta, the condition of the injured was also critical as they received multiple bullet wounds.
The law enforcement agencies conducted raids in several localities of the metropolis following the incident and took several suspected persons into custody who were shifted to police stations for interrogation.
They, however, admitted that the minivan of polio workers which came under attack in Eastern Bypass area was without security.
