ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Pervaiz Rashid Friday said that the Government and media would jointly ensure freedom of press and build a tolerant society, where argument would be their main weapon instead of bullet.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of “South Asian Broadcasting Agency” (SABAH), he said political parties, national institutions and Parliament are with media and both would build a peaceful Pakistan by eliminating the menace of terrorism from the country. All and sundry should help the government in this endeavor.
He said free media and strengthened and stable democracy would definitely ensure a prosperous Pakistan.
Talking about claims of media freedom, he said the role of political parties, civil society, non government organizations (NGOs) and lawyers must not be ignored as freedom is impossible without cooperation of other segments of society, supportive and facilitative role of the government. Above all the state has acknowledged media’s independence.
He said those groups, who do not tolerate criticism, were the main threat to democracy and freedom of press. Such menaces should be tackled with joint efforts of the government and journalist organizations.
