ISLAMABAD: Having a greater insight on disaster situation,media can resolve compound issues and remove hurdles in disaster relief and risk management through better communication.
This was stated by Managing Director Pakistan Television Corporation Muhammad Malick while addressing two-day workshop arranged by PTV on the role of broadcasters in emergency warning communication for disaster.
He said that journalists in Pakistan have a lack of specialization in this filed,therefore,this kind of workshop is essential for dealing with the complexity.
He encouraged journalists to constantly train and retrain themselves to become more effective to deal with the disaster situations.The PTV is a national institution which will continue to render its services for the betterment of the masses,he added.
Speaking on the occasion,Chairman NDMA Maj Gen Asghar Nawaz,said that the course was valuable for the NDMA as the media plays a key role in implementation of disaster management efforts and strategies,and his agency was striving hard to develop a good relationship with the media.
He stressed that there was a dire need for greater level of interaction between the disaster management establishment and the media.
He said that media has insights on what will happen,and it can support NDMA’s primary functions.
He commented that the training session would prove useful for knowledge and capacity building for disaster response and risk reduction.
He applauded the positive and historical role of PTV during large scale disaster.
