KARACHI: Sindh police during the current year has apprehended 5428 criminals from five most populated cities viz Karachi, Hyderabad, Larkana, Mirpurkhas and Shaheed Benazirabad.
These arrests made during encounters and raids in the five cities as well as special and coordinated anti-criminal measures adopted at highways also resulted in recovery of weapons and ammunition.
A detailed report presented to the Inspector General of Police, Sindh, Ghulam Haider Jamali at police headquarters here Wednesday indicated that 116 criminals were killed in 464 encounters while 330 others were caught red handed.
It was further mentioned that Sindh Police and Rangers through a joint strategy managed to eliminate 175 gangs of criminals while 15 patharedars and those extending shelter to them were also arrested.
Those apprehended were said to include 450 proclaimed offenders, 2983 absconders, 11 extortionists, five kidnappers, 15 terrorists, three target killers, 1609 robbers/ dacoits against whom a head money was announced by the provincial government.
The weapons recovered during the exercise included G-3 rifle, MP -Fives, SMGs/ Kalashnikovs, shot guns, repeaters, rifles, pistol, revolver/ mousers and bullets.
These were cited to be besides three suicide jackets, a rocket launcher, two locally made bombs, 67 hand grenades and two detonators etc.
IGP-Sindh reviewing the report said indiscriminate action has to be taken against criminals for restoration of law and order besides elimination of crime and terrorism from all parts of the province.
He urged the cops to remain extra vigilant with due stock for self protection in realisation of their professional obligations.
IG Jamali said intelligence has to be improved in the concerned areas with due provision for patrolling, picketing and random snap checking.
