WEBDESK: Karachi, the city of lights is slowly loosing it all. The monster of power shortage has haunted the city for over three decades and now Karachiites are facing the problem of water shortage. Here are a few ways to save water at home.
Check Leaks in Pipe lines and taps.
A small drip from the leak can waste up to hundreds of gallons of water per day so make sure to fix the leaks in pipe lines and taps.
Buy an ashtray
Yes, buy yourself a proper ashtray as your toilet is definitely not a replacement. Every time you flush a cigarette a large amount of water is wasted for no reason.
Take Shorter Showers
Turn of the water off after applying soap and then turn it back when you want to shower it. Apply the same rule while brushing your teeth.
Water your lawn only when it needs it
A good way to see if your lawn needs watering is to step on the grass. If it springs back up when you move, it doesn’t need water. If it stays flat, the lawn is ready for watering. Letting the grass grow taller will also detain water in the soil.
Use your washing machine carefully
Do not use your washing machines and dishwashers when they are half full because you will use it more often then. Try using them when they are full so you can get rid of the dirty clothes and dishes at once.
Never throw water away
If you pour too much out or have some left in your glass, use it because little drops make a big ocean.
Use a broom
Instead of washing down you whole house with a hose use a broom because after cleaning the house with water you will have to dry it out manually.
A bit of teaching
Children love water; well most of them do so try to teach your children to turn the faucets off tightly after each use.
Use commercial car wash
Try to clean your vehicle by a cleaning cloth instead of washing it every now and then. Use commercial car washers and ask them not to apply oil or grease after the wash, because oil and grease absorbs dust and then only a power pressure of hose can clean the dirt off them.
Set up barrels or small tanks this summer
You can collect rain water. Use it as a gift from nature.
There is so much that we as individuals can do to help save water. Our collective efforts will not only reduce our monthly water bills, but the water mafia will also have to bite dust.
