WEB DESK: It is almost the time of the year when you will see handcarts filled with purple and red berries and hear the familiar guttural voice which calls out potential customers to buy the ‘khattay meethay falsay’.
Falsa or Grewia asiatica is native to sub continent. Its tree is small in size about 15 – 20 feet in height. The tree can grow in a variety of soil conditions and climates and is drought resistant. However it needs protection from freezing temperatures.
Here are six reasons you should eat falsas.
1) The fruit juice contains magnesium, iron, potassium, calcium, carbohydrates and vitamins A and C. The antioxidants it contains are thought to be protective against cancer.
2)The fruit, leaves and roots are all used for medicinal purposes and cooling tonic. An infusion of the bark is used to relieve fevers, to treat diarrhea. It is an astringent and aids digestion, and used as a remedy for stomach indigestion.
3) The unripe fruit relieves inflammations and is used to treat respiratory, heart and blood diseases and to treat feverish conditions. The ripe fruit is cooling. It cools down the body temperature. It also benefits in throat disorders.
4) The juice helps digestion. It alleviates stomachache, normalizes heart rate and blood pressure.
5) It helps pass urine.
6) It is good for your skin. Falsa removes pimples, cures anemia and removes skin dryness.
