WEB DESK: The best way to help smokers quit is to bribe them, a new study states.
Researchers found out that $150 distributed over a period of six months, four times can rid a smoker of his cancer-causing habit.
When compared to providing smokers nicotine gums and counseling, financial rewards stood a better chance. It was explained that this was because most people did not have strong will powers, but the fear of losing money was something that disciplined them better.
The study was conducted on 2500 volunteers from the United States.
Some of the volunteers were given financial rewards at the end of every smoke-free month. If they smoked, money was taken from them.
The other group was given information leaflets and counseling.
The first group was given a financial reward for not smoking each month.
The group which was rewarded with money remained smoke-free for six months.
The research was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
