WEB DESK: Gurib Fakim became the first female Muslim president of an African country.
Gurib Fakim was appointed by the parliament of Mauritius as the sixth president of the country. Fakim is also the first female president of the country. She is a biologist who accidentally became a politician.
Fakim was handpicked by the country’s opposition party. At first she thought that no one is going to notice her campaign. She became transfixed as the result came in.
It all happened so quickly that she never got the time to get prepared as the reigning president who was set to complete his rule till 2017 resigned on May 29.
She is focused on fixing the economy because with economy comes employment and with this comes social welfare, free healthcare and free education. Mauritius with no natural resources has one of the highest per capital income in Africa.
There not so many well known female figures in the continent who young girls can look up to. Fakim has become an iconoclast that women from Africa or even other third world countries can follow.
