GILGIT: For elections on 24 seats of the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly, polling began amid strict securtiy, Aaj News reported.
The polling which began on 8:00 am will continue till 5:00 pm. A total of 467 candidates are taking part in the elections.
Over 600,000 people are using their right to vote at the polling stations to elect 24 legislators.
Electioneering campaigns ended on Saturday.
To maintain law and order, election material was transferred under army supervision to polling stations in the seven participating districts of the region.
Deployment of troops was requested by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the civil administration so that free and fair elections could be held.
The Gilgit-Baltistan legislative assembly was created through a presidential order in 2009. An interim government was set up with a 12-member caretaker cabinet to conduct free and fair elections on December 13, 2014.
