WEB DESK: About 18 years ago an infertile Muslim couple adopted a Hindu child, brought her up as a Hindu and then this Thursday night married her to a Brahmin business man from Delhi.
The story which Indian media reported became a crowning example of interfaith harmony– where a couple raised a child in the faith he was born in.
Shabir Khan with his wife adopted the daughter of his close friend Sharma, who already had six daughters while Khan did not have a child of his own. At that time Khan used to live in Vinod Nagar, East Dehli.
Khan saw the arrival of his adopted daughter as a good omen since he was able to moveout of Vinod Nagar to start a new life in Rahul Vihar, Ghaziabad. The shop he ran for a living began doing well.
Since he adopted Gudiya he never enforced his ideology on her and brought her up as a Hindu. From Eid to Diwali Khan celebrated all the festivals with Gudiya.
Gudiya has completed her 12 years of education from a school affiliated with Central Board of Secondary Education.
Her Muslim parents married her of at a Hindu wedding, in a ceremony as grand as they could afford.
After bidding farewell to his daughter Khan felt sad, as there will be no one to celebrate Diwali with her again. He calls Gudiya his ‘dil ka tukra– part of his heart’.
