The Rohingya are Muslim minority group from Rakhine region which is situated between the borders of Myanmar and Bangladesh. Myanmar does not recognize them as their citizens so they are a stateless people.
In 1982 they were forcefully deprived of their nationality
It’s been three decades or so since the Rohingya Muslims have been facing systematic discrimination and ill treatment. They live in huge slums, are not allowed to pray and are often attacked by extremist Buddhists.
Violence by Buddhist mobs has left over 280 people dead and displaced another 140,000 from their homes since 2012.
So bad is their condition, that they choose to take rickety boats and flee into the sea.
The Rohingyas are now regarded as most disarrayed people in the world. In 1978, 1992 and most recently 2012-13 and 2015 have fled from Myanmar into Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Pakistan and other countries as a result of large scale systematic genocide.
There suffering does not end by reaching the shores as they are treated as refugees- a burden on each state hosting them. If they are allowed to get off their boats they live in huge refugee camps; where they long for clean food and water.
They often work illegally, with fake documents.
The international community does see it as a fast growing crisis with their third generation facing the violence fleeing from one country to another looking for a normal life.
After years of silence on the issue, in December the UN General Assembly has approved a resolution urging Myanmar to provide “full citizenship” to its Rohingya Muslim minority and to allow them to move freely throughout the country.
The international community is now asserting pressure on Malaysia, Thailand and other respective countries to extend their help. Previously Malaysia has turned away boats full of refugees looking for shelter.
It is time that the international community steps up and tells Maynmar to recognize their citizens and end this years of genocide.
Let’s raise a voice that can echo in the fortified walls of the international global regime. #HelpRohyngia
