ISLAMABAD: Why does the government not want party based local bodies elections in the capital, the Supreme Court asked on Monday, Aaj News reported.
A three member bench presided by Justice Jawad S Khwaja heard the case. The SC gave the government a day to come up with an answer.
The Additional Attorney General told the bench that no the draft bill for local bodies elections is with the standing committee. He said that it was not likely the law will be passed till before Eid.
Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed asked why did the government want a non-party local bodies election.
To which Justice Jawad S Khawaja said, “What if for fifty years there was no law? Will there be no elections for 50 years?”
The case will be heard again on Tuesday.
