LAHORE: Traders’ associations in Lahore launched a shutter down strike in the city protesting the 0.3 percent with holding tax on bank transactions, Aaj News reported.
On an appeal by traders’ associations, businessmen affiliated to the Arshad Bhatti group kept their businesses closed on Saturday. Meanwhile business affiliated to the Khalid Parvez group distanced themselves from the strike, and announced to launch a separate strike on August 5.
A similar strike was observed in Multan, Faislabad and Vehari. Meanwhile traders based in Sargodha and Hafizabad will observe a strike on August 5.
The Islamabad and Karachi Chambers of Commerce will observe strikes on August 3 and August 5 respectively.
Some traders in Karachi have also launched a strike today, but a spokesman for KCCI distanced the chamber from the strike.
Traders bodies have said that if the government does not listen to their demands, it will announce a strike for an indefinite period.
