WEB DESK: Cricket is celebrated in Pakistan as its national sports and cricket players are not just ordinary player in Pakistan, they are celebrities. People love them when they perform good and when they give a bad performance; the backlash is the talk of the town. Here are some scandals and rumors about cricket players which made headlines at the time.
1) Moin Khan arrested for beating his wife (2007)
In January 2007, Pakistan’s ex-captain Moin Khan was arrested by Clifton police in Karachi for beating up his wife, mother of two, Tasneem Khan. Khan was freed on bail after submitting a surety bond.
He was later brought before a court and released on a guarantee that he would not repeat the shameful act again.
2) Moin Khan caught in a Casino (2015)
ICC Cricket World Cup, Chief selector Moin Khan was in the headlines again. Moin was spotted in a New Zealand casino and later sent back to Pakistan for disorderly conduct.
3) Salman, Amir, Asif jailed for match-fixing (2011)
This scandal was the talk of the town and the players are still facing the aftermaths of repercussions. In November 2011, Muhammad Aamir was sentenced to six months by a British court for fancy betting in a Test Match against England via bookie Mazhar Majeed. He was trialed for conspiracy to cheat at gambling and conspiracy to accept corrupt payments.
Fast bowler Muhammad Asif was sentenced to 12 months in prison and national captain Salman Butt was sentenced to two years and six months in prison for being a part of the same case.
4) Shahid Afridi banned for damaging pitch (2005)
In November 2005, Shahid Afridi was banned for a Test match and two One-day Internationals for deliberately damaging the pitch in a Nat-west series in England.
TV cameras had caught Afridi scraping his studded boots on the pitch, when play was held up after a gas canister had exploded in the background. Afridi had later pleaded guilty to a level three breach of the ICC code of conduct.
5) Shahid Afridi suspended for biting cricket ball (2010)
In January 2010, Shahid Afridi was caught on camera biting into the hard-ball towards the end of the ODI series in Australia whilst Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan was bowling. Afridi had later pleaded guilty to ball tampering and he was banned from 2 T20s.
6) Umar Akmal jailed for beating traffic police officer (2014)
In February 2014, Umer Akmal was sent to a lock up after having had a scuffle with a Traffic warden in Lahore. A Sessions court of Lahore had issued his arrest warrants for not appearing in the court in Traffic Warden case.
