WEB DESK: The nightingale of Bollywood, Lata Mangeshkar turned 86 today. Her career in Bollywood spans over 70 years.
They say diamonds churn out among immense pressure. At the age of 13, Lata lost her father and had to become the main bread winner of her family.Born in 1929, in a Marathi-speaking family in Indore she was the eldest of her four siblings.
The first song she sang for Bollywood was cut out from the final movie. She sang Naachu Yaa Gade, Khelu Saari Mani Haus Bhaari – for Vasant Joglekar’s Marathi movie Kiti Hasaal (1942).
With the film industry dominated by singers like Noor Jehan and Shamshad Begum, Lataji faced early rejection as her soft voice was labeled too high pitched and thin by many.
With time she became the most sought after singer in Bollywood, giving hit songs in movies like Pakeeza, Mughle Azam, Chalte Chalte, Mohabbatein, Hum Apkey Hain Kaun and Dilwaley Dulhaniya Ley Jaingay– to name a few.

1) Chalte Chalte Yunhi Koi Mil Gaya tha
This song from the 1972 Bollywood classic Pakeeza, starring the beautiful Meena Kumari, has been etched in our hearts forever.
2) Jab Pyar Kya tu Darna Kya
This song from the movie Mughl-e-Azam starring the dove eyed Madhubala– has become a figure of speech.
3) Tujhay Dekha tu ye Jana Sanam
This song from the 90s Dilwaley Dulhanya Le Jain Gay has been the national anthem of lovers across the sub-continent. Lata sung this song with Kumar Sanu.
