ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid said on Thursday that media can be an effective instrument and medium for making Pakistan a more secure and peaceful country.
Addressing the closing ceremony of a two-day training course on counter-terrorism strategic communication and media engagement for police officers in National Police Academy here, he said that in war against terrorism, media was part of the solution and not part of the problem.
He said in crisis situations the law enforcement agencies should swiftly project their viewpoint on media, otherwise perpetrators of terror act may take advantage of the space.
The minister emphasized the need to give protection and courage to the media houses so that they can highlight the evil deeds of the enemies of Pakistan who play with the lives of the people.
He further said that protection of lives and property was responsibility of the state and for that our Jawans and officers have given unprecedented sacrifices.
He said that the an incident of terrorism should not be called a tragic incident, rather it should be termed a barbaric and inhuman act.
Appreciating the role of police, he said that the personnel of the department have to perform their duties in very difficult circumstances as they are at the forefront of war against terrorism. The police personnel are benefactors of the nation as they have made it more safe and secure by offering supreme sacrifices, he added.
He called for highlighting the sacrifices of the police department, its officers and jawans.
He said after any incident of terrorism, the police officials should convey their message through media from position of strength and not weakness. They must bear in mind that they have rendered selfless sacrifices for the protection of the people. They should give their viewpoint by telling the journalists that their department has successfully foiled many terrorist plots and will do so in future too.
Such a communication will not only create awareness among the people about police sacrifices, but will further boost their confidence in law enforcement agencies, he said.
Pervaiz Rashid said that those who are involved in subversive activities are enemies of the state and they should be condemned by all and sundry.
The minister urged the people to donate money and sacrificial hides to only those organizations which work for the welfare of the society and not those organizations which are dubious in character.
He also asked the media,Ulema and other government institutions to play their due role to highlight the perils of donating to such dubious organizations which finance terrorists. Besides breaking the backbone of the terrorists, it is also vital to strangulate their financial funding,he emphasized.
Code of conduct for the media was a good development and as far as war on terrorism and National Action Plan was concerned the media has played very positive role.
Pervaiz Rashid said during the course of implementing National Action Plan, no complaints about glorification of terrorists have been observed.
He also stressed the need for training of media covering incidents of terrorism.
Rejecting the impression that electronic media was hungry for hard news like violence he appreciated the media role in the war against terrorism especially after the adoptation of NAP.
During the workshop a badge of police officers was imparted training how to handle media in crisis situation.Senior journalists and anchor persons gave lectures during the workshop.
