WEB DESK: After American TV series made a huge mistake of running an episode with “Homeland is Racist’ written in Arabic on its set, controversies one after the other have begun appearing on social media.
In a recent, Buzzfeed carried a video by activist and lawyer, Jibran Nasir, who pointed out six glaring mistakes Homeland has made about Pakistan.
In season 4 of the series a CIA operative is sent to Pakistan to solve a case. The way they show Islamabad is quite far from reality and reinforces stereotypes, critics point out.
Here are the 6 things Jibran points out.
1- How women dress up: The season shows all women adorning Burqas and scarves– which is not how everyone dresses in Pakistan.
2- They call a terrorist Hassaim Haqqani. They could have meant Hussain Haqqani, former Amabassador to the US, which is wrong on many parts.
3- They show Pakistanis attacking Carrie’s car– just because she is an Angrez.
4- Wrong Urdu: They use words like ‘Islamabad ke Makaan‘ and ‘Sarahaa’. Did they just use Google translate?
5- What Islamabad looks like- They show Islamabad full of mud houses and people in rags. In reality Islamabad is a beautiful modern city.
6- What Pakistanis look like– Pakistanis don’t look like Arabs. Period.
