As soon as the first day of Muharram begins, all over the city Sabeels are set up, which offer all passersby water to drink.
The concept of Sabeel is to remember the 72 martyrs of Karbala who were denied water and brutally killed by Yazid’s army on the hot sand of Karbala.
A member of Abu Talib Foundation who had arranged a sabeel near Guru Mandir, Abbas Rizvi, answered question about the tradition of setting up Sabeels in Muharram.
“On the same month Yazidi army started their brutality on the family of Imam Hussain (A.S.) at Karbala .For three days at Karbala water was denied to the prophet’s family.Among the dead was a small baby named Ali Asghar.”
This centuries old tradition is not something only Shia Muslims do. Sunni Muslims take equal part in it. “Imam Hussain (A.S.) was the Prophet’s (PBUH) grandson. And every one who reveres the Prophet (PBUH) is affected by the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (A.S.),” said Rizvi.
He added that ,“The purpose of sabeel in Muharram is to make sure that nobody will remain thirsty, without any discrimination of cast, creed or color. Whoever drink water shall sense the grief of sacrifices of imam Hussain(A.S.) and his companions.
As Imam Husain said remember me every time you drink water.
