WEB DESK: Sarmood Khoosat’s directorial, ‘Manto is all set to mesmerize audience in India with a special screening in the ’21st Kolkata International Film Festival’ (KIFF).
The festival kicked off on Sunday, November 15 with a grand inauguration from Indian superstar Amitabh Bachacan and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Manto’s lead actors Nimra Bucha and Sarmood Khoosat are in Kolkata to participate in the festival.
Times of India has reported that despite having a visa to travel to Mumbai, the duo had missed the Mumbai screening of their movie due to ‘fear’.
“Our film would get screened, but we could understand that our visit would be underplayed,” Sarmad said. Neither wanted to hide behind the wings while the film was being screened.
Speaking about the biopic of legendary writer Saadat Hasan Manto, the film’s director Khoosat said that he is a legacy of the subcontinent and stands for freedom of expression.
“The kind of response the film has generated in Pakistan and the way it has been received at the film festivals proves the greatness of the writer. I believe what he had written during the last years of his life is still existing. Not much has changed,” Khoosat added.
Based on the true life of legendary poet Sadaat Hassan Manto, the films stars the bigwigs of Pakistani media fraternity including Sania Saeed, Mahira Khan, Saba Qamar, Hina Bayat, Nimra Bucha, and the multi-talented director himself.
The multifaceted Khoosat played the title role in the film while the talented Saba Qamar was Noor Jehan. Mahira Khan has also made a cameo appearance in the movie.
After sweeping at the local box office, the film also had several successful international screenings including Washington DC South Asian Film Festival (DCSAFF) and at the Ivy League universities of the US such as Yale, Harvard, Columbia University, and University of California, Berkley.
