WEB DESK: The military has a much larger role than typically the constitution of Pakistan would permit, former foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar said in an interview to Aljazeera.
Rabbani was invited in a talk show ‘Head to Head’ by Mehdi Hasan on the channel in which Pakistan’s stance on key issues were discussed including drone strikes and Kashmir issue.
The former foreign minister thinks that referendum can be a solution to Kashmir problem given India agrees to it.
On the state of minorities in the Pakistan People’s Party government, Rabbani stood embarrassed as a Pakistani and accepted the atrocities committed against religious minorities specifically Ahmadis.
Pakistan remained in military dictatorship for 33 years out of a total of 68 independent years. While talking about ‘who is calling the shots’ in Pakistan regarding policy matters- the government or the military- Rabbani reiterates, “I was fiercely independent for someone to call me and tell me which line I have to take,”
“On issues I thought they are relevant stakeholder, I would consult, I would negotiate but on matters on which they aren’t relevant party like trade with India, I don’t think military is a relevant stakeholder”
When asked what the Pakistani government did for the missing person cases reported, she said,
“In 2010, we created a judicial commission with three superior court judges to investigate this matter. In 2011, we re-established the judicial commission to investigate the matter which resulted in the fact that today from 2,800 missing person reported to 1,500 cases which are already resolved. This was done by civilian government.”
When Mehdi Hasan questioned the credibility of Pakistan calling itself a democratic state, Khar states, “We can absolutely call it a democracy, which is finding its ground.”
Pakistan has been accused of playing a double role in ‘war on terror’ on the show which Rabbani retaliated with her argument “Funding the terror organization was never our policy guide, Pakistan could never have the ability to be to take on every terror network within the region all at the same time.”
